Established in 1970 GBAC – Great Bay Athletic Club – will be celebrating 50 years of continuous service to Newmarket and the surrounding communities in 2020. Built originally as six indoor tennis courts; GBAC has evolved and adapted to the ever changing needs and trends of those in pursuit of an active lifestyle.
Four racquetball courts, locker rooms, a small strength training area and an aerobic studio were added in the late 70s. The mid 80s found the demand for fitness to be greater than that for tennis and two tennis courts were converted to what is now our main strength training area, turf, and large group exercise studio. A cycling studio, women’s only strength training area, boxing space, and a yoga studio have all been added over the years. All 55,000 square feet of GBAC were air conditioned in the early 90s.
Ownership of GBAC has changed several times over the 50 years; John Terlizzi – the current owner – acquired the real estate and business in 1999. In 2007 John sold the business to Seacoast Sports Clubs but retained the real estate. In 2017 John reacquired the business and currently operates GBAC independently with a license agreement with Seacoast Sports Clubs that allows GBAC members the use of three additional facilities, two in Portsmouth and one in Seabrook.
Seacoast Sports Clubs provides over 150 group classes per week, greater than 150,000 square feet of space, four indoor tennis courts, eight racquetball courts, an indoor salt-water pool, two hot tubs, six saunas, two steam rooms, an indoor track and even a Boxing Robot - BOTBOXER. GBAC and Seacoast Sports Clubs truly offer world-class active lifestyle facilities with a friendly small town atmosphere.
